Saint-Vigor Chapel

Saint-Vigor Chapel

Located only 3 km West of Falaise on the road to Pont d’Ouilly, The rustic Chapel St Vigor is famous for the frescoes created by Japanese Artist Kyoji TAKUBO

A little history

Saint-Vigor Chapel

The chapel, built in the 15th century by nobleman William of Vanembras, fits in with the surrounding country-farms. It has undergone many changes through the ages. Members of the Vanembras family were buried inside the nave until 1737. Some tombstone are still visible, a small cemetery surrounds the chapel.

The site was sealed in 1983 because the chapel was falling into ruins. Suring a first visit in 1987, Japanese artist Kyoji TAKUBO fell under its charm and he decided to make it into contemporary art masterpiece. Work started in 1992.

Takubo’s work

By 1993 the framework was restored and the rooftop appeared covered with glass colored tiles. A steel floor was laid and walls dressed with metal leaves on which the artist created his paintings. This contemporary creation by Takubo has since become a symbolic place of French –Japanese collaboration and cultural exchanges.
